Smiths Detections is an internationally active business unit of the Smiths Group. Its job involves detecting hazardous goods such as explosives and other biological and chemical substances. More than 90% of the baggage X-ray equipment and vehicle scanning facilities at Frankfurt Airport alone are supplied by Smiths Detection. BFE has been involved in the interior fittings for scanning vehicles several times in the past, and the company was also awarded the assignment for the "Scan Van" project.
Assignment:
The assignment includes designing and equipping 10 Mercedes Sprinter 315 CDi vehicles as full response vehicles, which are intended for use during X-ray examinations of baggage and cargo at airports in Saudi Arabia. Identical vehicles have already been supplied to many countries both in and outside Europe.
Solution:
A proprietary BFE modular fitting system was used for all interior fitting work. The chassis of the vehicle needed to be reinforced in order to install the scanning unit (X-ray), with BFE also carrying out this work. An air conditioning unit, AC alternator, and camera surveillance equipment were also installed. BFE also completed all the cabling and initial startup work.

A mobile baggage scanner and a security command center were installed.
All 10 Sprinters could be entirely fitted out very quickly as a follow-up project without a preceding design phase. Implementation was completed in just 14 weeks.
